A small and charming square nestled between buildings, it is connected on one side to via Pretoria and on the other to via del popolo (border road that ran along the city walls) through two cut stone staircases built in September 1844. Initially called largo Tassiello or della Trinità due to the presence of a gate of the same name that allowed access to said square, the square was subsequently named after the Duke della Verdura, from the name of the superintendent of the Province of Basilicata (1842-1847). The urban and rural police regulations established that from 1845 the square should host the sale of meat and fish. In July 1943, following the expansion works of Largo Tassello or Trinità, the Gate was replaced by a sort of virtual alley.
