No sources have reached us regarding the foundation of the church which, very probably, must have been directly connected to the church of San Giacomo Apostolo, outside the Portasalza walls. The church, probably built before 1200, contains works of art from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, years in which the Portasalza borough began to form. It has a single nave with a polychrome wooden coffered ceiling from the first half of the 1800s with octagonal elements and, in the center, floral motifs. In an aedicule behind the main altar, it is possible to admire a 17th-century wooden statue of Santa Lucia, a superb work by an unknown southern artist. Coming from the church of Santa Maria del Sepolcro is the valuable 15th-century holy water font.
