THE MALVACCARO VILLA

Audio guide · EN 0:00 / 0:00

The only Roman villa recovered in the Potenza territory is that of Malvaccaro. There are some traces dating to the 1st-2nd century AD, below the structures visible today, belonging to a monumentalization phase, which is located between the 3rd and the first half of the 4th century. The representation rooms of the villa are developed on several levels. Starting from the lower one, decorated with pavonazzetto marble crustae, there was access to the triclinium (dining room), with a mosaic floor that has a medallion in the center with the image of the three Graces and concludes towards the north with an apsidal coenatio. Here, on a semicircular masonry sofa (stibadium), certainly made more comfortable by cushions, the guests took their places. Lying on the sofa, the guests enjoyed the image of the three Graces, in a context that the figurative representation of amphorae and baskets of fruits and flowers made evocative of Dionysian banquets.
