SAN ROCCO

Audio guide · EN 0:00 / 0:00

The building dates back to the second half of the 19th century and was built to replace an older chapel that stood in the same area. The funerary relief reused in the facade of the church of San Rocco dates between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The representation of a woman with a veiled head, who touches an edge of the veil and holds a fan in the other hand, reflects a custom of the time. Simple funerary stelae and altars with inscriptions, or actual half-bust reliefs like this one, have been found in the areas of the seminary and the central station, in the Bethlehem, Montereale, Santa Maria and Bucaletto districts, which naturally at the time fell outside the city.
