Following the suppression of monastic orders, the monastery of the Reformati of Santa Maria and the conventual building were used by the Ministry of War as temporary quarters for soldiers. The Lucania Barracks, formerly Basilicata, was designed in 1885 by Lt. Col. Carlo Tucci and the first body was inaugurated in 1896 to house a battalion of the 13th Infantry Regiment. The works were completed in 1914 with the addition of the second section. The 81st (1898-1901), 7th (1901-1907), and 29th (1907-1929) Infantry Regiment had permanent headquarters. The barracks suffered very serious damage following the air raids of September 8-9, 1943 which made it unusable until 1965, the year of reopening. The building is developed on three floors. The main facade overlooks via Ciccotti and shows walls with external stone facing, opened by overlapping rows of mullioned windows.
