On the left bank of the Basento, at the end of the nineteenth century, the remains of a Roman aqueduct with iron pipes (fistulae), presumably dating back to the end of the 3rd century AD, must have still been visible. Currently, this is what remains of the 'San Vito' bridge with Roman-age foundations, originally named 'Sant'Oronzio', a saint to whom the cathedral of Potenza was also initially dedicated. The construction of the bridge is to be related to the road enhancement, implemented thanks to the construction of the via Herculia, wanted by Maximian Herculeus, augustus with Diocletian, during his stay in Grumentum. The bridge is therefore part of a broader economic reorganization project, wanted by the emperor.
